Metalcore/Metal
There are countless number of subgenres of metal. My primary focus is on progressive metal, symphonic metal, melodic metalcore and electronicore.
1. Time, the Valuator - Vibrant (progressive metal) - LINK
2. Phinehas - I Am The Lion (metalcore) - LINK
Best guitar solo I've ever heard.
3. If I Were You - Pull Me Under (metalcore) - LINK
4. If I Were You - Faithless (metalcore) - LINK
5. Dark Tranquillity - Atoma (death metal) - LINK
Softer and easy to listen to for a death metal track. The growls don't bother me much.
6. Shrezzers - Noodles (post-hardcore/progressive metal with lots of yummy saxophone love) - LINK
7. Asking Alexandria - A Prophecy (metalcore)- LINK
8. Of Mice & Men - Second and Sebring (metalcore)- LINK
9. While She Sleeps feat. Oli Sykes - Silence Speaks (metalcore) - LINK
The level of cinematography in this music video is astounding. One of my favourite MVs of all time.
10. I Prevail - Bow Down (metalcore)- LINK
"Trauma" is a fantastic album. Good mix of cleans and screams. Not too heavy.
11. Periphery - Satellites (progressive metalcore) - LINK
Song is long but builds up nicely to make it a true masterpiece. Highly impressive vocal performance.
12. In Flames - Meet Your Maker (alt metal) - LINK
Love the guitar especially the solo and melodic sound
13. In Flames - Where The Dead Ships Dwell (alt metal) - LINK
My favourite song by them. Listened to it once and was instantly hooked. Simp[y a masterpiece
14. In Flames - The Mirror's Truth (alt metal) - LINK
15. Dream Theater - Panic Attack (progressive metal) - LINK
Good balance not sounding too proggy and melodically engaging the whole time with the relentless energy. Love the orchestral elements. Was immediately impressed at first listen which is rare for me of a DT song.
16. Dream Theater - The Path That Divides (prog & symphonic metal) - LINK
I was blown away at how good this was at the first listen. Reminds me of Nightwish but with more technical elements. Beautifully composed and emotionally engaging. The only thing I don't like is the inserted sound effects around the 3:44 mark (the album this song is on is a concept album which is why they're there).
17. Dream Theater - Outcry (prog & symphonic metal) - LINK
Parts remind me of Nightwish again. A longer track at 11 mins and usually that deters me from listening to the whole thing. However, this song doesn't suffer from long runtime at all imo. The beautiful composition with sudden tempo and tonal shifts keeps it engaging throughout.
18. Dream Theater - On The Backs of Angels (prog & symphonic metal) - LINK
Similar to one of their most popular songs, "Pull Me Under", I think this one stands out more with the choir vocals and more creative guitar riffs.
19. Dream Theater - The Enemy Inside (prog & heavy metal) - LINK
Has orchestral elements. Heavier sounding but still very much melody driven with a memorable chorus. Later part of the track goes into "riff salad" mode but still feels engaging and fun.
20. Dream Theater - Wither (prog rock/metal) - LINK
Ballad type song that is moving and has a melody with a wide appeal. Great guitar solo.
21. Born of Osiris - Angel or Alien (progressive metalcore) - LINK
Outstanding 10/10 track.
22. Born of Osiris - Poster Child (progressive metalcore) - LINK
23. Born of Osiris - Shadowmourne (progressive metalcore) - LINK
The saxophone is such ear-candy.
24. Underoath - Let Go (metalcore) - LINK
This is easily the best UØ song released so far post-breakup. Erase Me was completely unlistenable and while Voyeurist wasn't as bad, it still didn't have that classic UØ vibe that long-time fans loved. This song has that magic and I can't wait to hear more music in this direction.
